Habit Correction in DHA Phase 4, Lahore

Stopping Bad Habits Before They Cause Damage.

Thumb sucking is cute in babies, but if it continues past age 4 or 5, it can ruin your child's bite. At Dental Services in Sector DD, we offer gentle guidance and custom Habit Breaking Appliances to help children stop thumb sucking or tongue thrusting, saving you money on braces later.

Why Intervene Now?

The pressure from a thumb or tongue can push the front teeth forward ("Buck Teeth") and narrow the roof of the mouth. This leads to an Open Bite (where front teeth don't touch) and speech lisps. Correcting the habit now allows the teeth to drift back into place naturally.

What Services Do We Offer?

  • Counseling: Sometimes, hearing it from the dentist works better than hearing it from Mom or Dad! We use positive reinforcement charts.
  • Thumb Guard: A removable plastic guard worn on the hand.
  • Fixed Habit Appliance (Crib): A small metal wire placed behind the upper teeth. It stops the thumb from finding that "comfy spot" on the roof of the mouth. It breaks the subconscious habit in just a few months.

Is This Right for Your Child?

  • Do they suck their thumb/finger vigorously?
  • Are their front teeth starting to stick out?
  • Do they push their tongue forward when swallowing (Tongue Thrust)?
  • Are they over age 4?

Our Process at our Sector DD Clinic

  1. Assessment: We check the bite for damage.
  2. Discussion: We talk to the child to see if they are ready to stop.
  3. Fabrication: If needed, we take a mold and make the appliance.
  4. Cementation: We cement it to the back molars (like a retainer).
  5. Removal: Once the habit is broken (usually 3-6 months), we remove it.

What Our Parents Are Saying

"We tried everything—hot sauce, gloves, bribery. Nothing worked. Dr. Rashid put in a habit appliance and my son stopped sucking his thumb in 3 days. Amazing." — Mr. Hamza, Askari XI

FAQs About Habit Appliances

Is it painful?

No, it doesn't hurt. It just feels a bit bulky for the first few days and might affect speech slightly (like a lisp), but they adapt quickly.

Is it punishment?

No! We frame it as a "helper" to remind their tongue/thumb to stay away.

Will the teeth fix themselves?

If caught early enough, yes! The gap often closes on its own once the thumb pressure is removed.
